    • Communication should be clear
  2. Report writing
    • Audit reporting is the final part of the audit process
    • It represents the bridge between the auditor's visit and the outcome of certification
    • The statements of evidence must align with the standards and criteria
    • It accurately reflects the process and conclusions presented at the audit
    • Aim is for a well presented professional report that is also accepted by the service audited
    • You should get a draft report that allows you to provide feedback on the audit findings
  3. Information gathering
    • Ability to identify relevant documents
    • Client/resident/consumer records review
    • Interviewing and communication skills
    • Observation of the environment and equipment
    • Ability to access further information and clarify key areas with relevant personnel
  4. Evaluation methods and interpretation
    • An understanding of the standards
    • Ability to gather information
    • To fairly and objectively assess evidence
    • Sound judgment and analytical skills
    • Also require skills for synthesis of information (i.e. bringing together)
    • Link with professional report writing
  5. Planning and facilitation
    • Sound understanding of audit process
    • Commit full attention and support to the audit process
    • Ability to schedule activities and also adapt during the visit - time management
    • Constantly evaluate the effects of audit observations and personal interactions during an audit
    • Show sensitivity and minimise disruption during the visit
    • Arrive at conclusions based on the assessed evidence
    • Deliver the findings in a supportive manner

    • An understanding of the service and its philosophy
    • Auditing leadership

An audit is defined in AS/NZS ISO 19011:2003 as:

"Systematic, independent and documented process for obtaining audit evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which the audit criteria are fulfilled."
