Whakatauki (Proverb)Hutia te rito o te harakeke Pull out the centre stalk of the flax bush Harakeke (Flax)Harakeke (Phormium tenax), called flax by the Europeans, is really a lily. It is unique to New Zealand and is one of our oldest plant species. Traditionally Maori remove only the older leaves on the outside of the plant. It is believed the three inner layers represent a family. This outer layer represents the grandparents, whereas the inner layer of new shoots or the child remains to be protected by the next inner layer of leaves, the parents. Traditionally, Maori used bundles of dried flower stalks (kokari) to make Floats or rafts and made use of the stiff spear like leaves to make kete (baskets), whariki (floor mats), ka kahu (cloaks), fishing nets and ropes. |
